Abstract

Postmortem carboxyhemglobin (COHb) levels in the blood of victims (n: 18) suspected of CO poisoning were determined by Dubowski's spectrophotometric method. Occurence of methemoglobin (MetHb) in postmortem blood was also investigated by spectrophotometric method. COHb and MetHb levels of postmortem blood samples were found between 63.00-88.00 % (mean 73.11 ± 6.90 %) and 0.864.20 % (mean 3.00 ± 0.87%) respectively. COHb and MetHb levels of the subjects (cigarette smokers n: 100) who exposed to low CO were also determined by the spectrophotometric method mentioned above. COHb and MetHb levels of the smokers were found 1.94 ± 0.11 % COHb and 1.19 ± 0.05 % MetHb who smoked 1-9 cigarettes daily (n: 44), 3.25 ± 0.19 % COHb and 1.47 ± 0.06 % MetHb who smoked 10-20 cigarettes daily (n: 23), 4.36 ± 0.14 % COHb and 1.55 ± 0 . 1 4 % MetHb who smokers in all groups were found significantly higher than the nonsmokers (P < 0.01, P < 0.05)
