Abstract

A number of historians characterize Germany's Ottoman policy as "apolitical, anti-colonial and purely economically oriented". Against this thought, there are critical sociological and Marxist imperialist studies. These particularly point to Germany's foreign policy as an example of imperialist expansion. Therefore, during the First World War, the Ottoman Empire is defined as a vassal empire completely ruled by Germany. The aim of this study is to better understand Germany's Ottoman policy, which is summarized with the words "Baghdad railway" or "penetration pacifique". Germany's imperialist expansion started with the Ottoman Empire in the last quarter of the 19th century, but Germany was not the only country that had a say in the Ottoman Empire in this period.
