Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the importance of PCT as a diagnostic marker in neonatal sepsis. Methods: The study was included totally 36 newborn (16 of 32 newborn with sepsis as patient group, remaining 16 newborn without infection but hospitalized because of other causes as control group). In patient group, 8 of them was diagnosed as early neonatal sepsis, remaining 8 patient was diagnosed as late neonatal sepsis. Blood samples for IL-6, CRP, PCT was taken on first, second, third and fifth day of admission. Result: Although both IL-6 and CRP levels were found to be statistically significant in diagnosis of early neonatal sepsis, but only IL-6 level was found to be statistically significant in discrimination of early and late neonatal sepsis's diagnosis. The differences of IL-6 and CRP levels were determined as statistically significant on 0-5 days and 1-5 days respectively. Coclusion: In conclusion, we emphasized that PCT was found to be statistically unimportant in diagnosis of early neonatal sepsis.
