Abstract

Awareness and knowledge of tuberculosis among Kafkas University students Objective: To set educational programs to raise the level of awareness and knowledge of tuberculosis, the present level of knowledge of the population should be determined. Methods: A structured form was prepared consisting of 15 questions about TB and was administered to 1822 voluntary students to determine the level of awareness and knowledge of TB among students. The questionnaire was administered to the students of the 5 faculties of Kafkas University in Kars in May 2006. Mean age was 21.54 ± 2.1 (17-49 years). Results: Present study showed that 198 students (10.8%) had no knowledge about TB. Girls were found to be more afraid of being a TB patient than boys (p = 0.000, for both). Of students 184(10.1%) had low, 1007(55.3%) had moderate, and 631(34.6%) had high knowledge about TB. The knowledge of tuberculosis of female students was significantly higher than male students (p< 0.001). The higher the class, the higher was the high level ofthe knowledge of TB (p< 0.05). Comparing the faculties, the students of School of Health Sciences had higher level of knowledge o than those of the other faculties. Conclusion: We suggest that periodic educational programs to students about TB can be effective to struggle with the disease and multi-centre detailed studies are needed.
