Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of melatonin secreted by pineal gland on UVB induced skin cancer. Material and Methods: Seventyfive Wistar sıçans were randomly allocated into five groups. Fifteen sıçans were used in each group. In group A; there were sıçans with pinealectomy and uvb radiation. In group B; there were sıçans only with pinealectomy. In group C; there were sıçans with sham opesıçanion and uvb radiation. In group E; there were sıçans only with uvb radiation. Finally group K was control group. After six months of radiation and follow-up, skin samples were obtained from sıçans. Results: Histological investigation of the samples obtain from the groups did not have any difference including diplasia formation. Even in the group with pinealectomy no dysplasia observed from the samples of skin. During the study some changes were determined in external view of skin of sıçans from different groups. But histologically no changes were dtermined. Conclusion: The pathological effects of ultra-violet rays on skin are well known by a lot of clinic studies. Melatonin minimizes the negative effects of ultraviolet. Melatonin is no longer considered exclusively a pineal hormone after the beginig of 1970, but a bioactive substance with extrapineal sites of synthesis. Kesıçaninocyte is one of the cells where melatonin is produced. This study showed that the extrapineal secretion of melatonin and other protective mechanisms are enough to protect skin against uvb induced skin cancer.

Özet

Amaç: Bu deneysel çalışmada, pineal bezden salgılanan melatoninin, ultraviyole B (uvb) ışınına maruz kalan sıçanlarda koruyucu etkisinin belirlenmesi amaçlandı. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu çalışmada yetmiş beş tane Wistar sıçan beş gruba ayrılmıştır. A grubunda ki sıçanlara pinealektomi yapılıp uvb uygulanmıştır.
