Abstract

Objective: Elevated serum uric acid concentrations have been observed in clinical conditions associated with hypoxia. In this study, we have investigated the value of uric acid in COPD with hypoxia as a marker of hypoxia and relation of uric acid levels with pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gases. Methods: Thirty five patients with COPD, 30 patients without COPD and 20 healthy subjects were investigated. The mean age was 51.5$pm$ 13.8 in patients with COPD (29 M, 6 F), 47.3± 11.2 in patients without COPD (20 M, 10 F) and 49.5 ± 9.8 in healthy subjects (10 M, 10 F). Results: In patients with COPD, pretreatment mean serum uric acid levels were 8.69$pm$ 2.94 mg/d and posttreatment levels were 6.82$pm$2.88 mg/dl. Mean serum uric acid was 4,65± 1.94 mg/dl in patients without COPD and 4.62$pm$ 0.87 mg/dl in healthy subjects. These data showed that pretreatment levels of mean serum uric acid was higher when compared to posttreatment level (p<0.05). Also there were significant differences between both pre and post treatment mean serum uric acid levels and non-COPD patients and healthy controls serum uric acid levels (p<0.01). After treatment, serum uric acid level was decreased and pulmonary f unction, tests and arterial blood gases were improved. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that serum uric acid level may be a marker of hypoxia in patients with COPD but further investigations are needed for this topic.
