Abstract

Objective: In this study, we aimed to reveal asymptomatic bacteriuria prevalence in children and to express its importance in this age group. Methods: In this study, we performed a urine screening test by dipstick and microscopical evaluation to randomly selected 181 children, aged between 7-12. Results: Of the children included in the study, 50.8% were males and 49.2% were females. Hematuria was detected in 5.5%, pyuria in 8.8%, bacteriuria in 9.4% and crystalluria in 7.2% of the children. Hematuria, pyuria and bacteriuria were found to be significantly higher in females compared to males, while crystalluria was found to be significantly higher in males compared to females. Conclusion: According to the results, asymptomatic bacteriuria and hematuria constitute an important problem in school-aged children. Taking its low cost into consideration, it can be concluded that urine screenig tests should be performed in the children and patients with high risk at primary care settings.
