Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the importance and frequency of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction associated with otitis media and effusion. Method: Consequent 41 patients with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction admitted with a complaint of epiphora were included to the study. All patients underwent otorhinolaryngological and tympanometric examinations. Hydrostatic massage was recommended to the patients aged less than 12 months and to the patients overtime age probing under general anesthesia was performed. Results: Fourteen boys and 27 girls, totally 41 patients with a mean age of 19.4±13.31 (3-75) months were included to the group study. The mean following time was 17.5±8.0 (3-28) months. Nasolacrimal duct obstruction was treated in 25 (89.3%) patients with hydrostatic massage, whereas probing was applied to 3 (10.7%) patients who did not improve with hydrostatic massage, 17 (41.5%) patients had otitis media with effusion and 6 (14.6%) of these patients had unilateral, 11 (26.8%) had bilateral otitis media with effusion. Conclusion: Our study supported that congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction may be associated with otitis media and effusion. For this reason, we can state that in patients diagnosed as congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, it of otorhinolaryngologic examination will be an appropriate approach
