Abstract

Ischemic stroke and its complications are remarkably associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. Recently, gaining further knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, infectious agents became of interest in the etiology of atherosclerosis. During the last decade the newly recognized, Gram (-), obligatory intracellular bacteria, chalamyclia pneumoniae (TWAR), was encountered at the atheromatous plaques and has been detected by microimmunofluorescence (MIF), immunocytochemistry (ICC), polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electron microscopy (EM). In this study we measured serum IgG antibody titers against chlamydia pneumoniae in patients with ischemic stroke by microimmunofluorecense and compared the seropositivity with the control group. 62 patients with ischemic stroke and 60 cases without any vascular pathology were included into the study. There was statistical significance between patient and control group according to IgG seropositivity (p=0.0037). The presence of atherosclerotic risk factors at ischemic stroke group and control cases and their association with IgG type antibodies against chlamydia pneumoniae were not significant. Additionally association of IgG seropositivity with the nature of the cerebral lesions were not meaningful. Further epidemiological studies of the effect of this infection on stroke are needed.
