Abstract

The studies on the interaction of fluid flow with two-dimensional submerged circular cylinders are important for the design of such bluff bodies. The information related to the velocity field of affected flow region around the cylinder helps understand the basic characteristic features of flow-cylinder interaction problems. In this study, the velocity field of two-dimensional steady, turbulent flow with $Re_D$=840 and 4150 around an immersed horizontal, circular, smooth cylinder is measured for gap ratios of G/D=0.2, 0.3 and 1.0. Using the measured data, the velocity profiles on the cylinder surface and on the bed are drawn. From the boundary layer velocity profiles, the shear stress distributions on the surfaces of cylinder and bed are determined using Newton’s law of viscosity. Experimental results for velocity field around the cylinder and the wall shear stress distributions show that the wall effect on the flow becomes negligibly small when the gap ratio G/D=1.0.
