Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of secondary bleeding after tonsillectomy in adult patients. Material and Methods: Thirty-two patients who admitted to a tertiary care center with secondary bleeding after tonsillectomy were evaluated. The terms of age, gender, indication and method of tonsillectomy, time of bleeding, biochemical results, bleeding etiology and interventions applied were determined. Results: Nineteen (60%) patients were male and thirteen (40%) were female and the mean age was 24.6 (18-45 years). It was determined that 27 of the patients were operated by cold knife tonsillectomy method and five patients were operated by bipolar diathermy. The average referral period is 7.6 (1-16 days) days after surgery. The cause of bleeding could only be demonstrated in five (15.6%) patients. Conservative treatment methods were used in two of the patients, whereas bleeding intervention was performed under local anesthesia in 17 (53.1%), and general anesthesia in 13 (40%) patients. Bleeding diathesis was not detected in any of the patients. Conclusion: Secondary bleeding after tonsillectomy is frequently seen in adult patients and can be life threatening. Various forms of treatment and bleeding interventions are crucial to prevent possible complications.
