Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the hearing levels of patients with subclinical hypothyroidism with pure-tone audiometry.Patients and Methods: The study included 28 patients (6 males, 22 females; mean age 42.6 years; range 22 to 63 years) diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism at our clinic between November 2014 and October 2015 and 29 healthy controls (9 males, 20 females; mean age 41.8 years; range 18 to 61 years). Pure-tone audiometry was performed to all participants. Pure-tone averages were measured at 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz.Results: In the patient group, pure-tone averages in left ear were significantly higher compared to the control group at 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz (p<0.05). In the patient group, five patients had hearing loss (sensorineural hearing loss in four patients, conductive type hearing loss at one ear and mix type hearing loss at the other ear in one patient). Hearing loss was detected in two individuals in the control group (both sensorineural hearing loss). In patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, pure-tone averages were similar with the control group except for certain frequencies. Conclusion: In our study patients with hearing loss were higher than control group. For this reason in patients with subclinical hypothyroidi we recommend evaluation with puretone audiometry in certain intervals.
