Abstract

Objective: The aims of this study are to isolate the bacteria cultured in urine of patients aged 0-5 years admitted to outpatient clinic of Kahramanmaraş Sutcu Imam University Medical School Department of Pediatrics who were diagnosed as urinary tract infection, to isolate gram negative bacteria in these cultures and to determine the susceptibility of these bacteria to certain antimicrobial agents. Material and Methods: Positive urine cultures and antibiotic susceptibility situations of isolated Gram negative organisms from urine samples of 187 children admitted outpatient clinic of Kahramanmaraş Sutcu Imam University Medical School Department of Pediatrics between July 2000-January 2003 and previously diagnosed with urinary tract infection and production of 105 CFU/ml or more bacteria in their urine evaluated retrospectively. Results: Patients were consisted of 3 age groups (0-24, 25-48 and 49-60 months). The most common bacteria isoleted in each age group was Escherichia coli (E. coli). There were no strain resistant to ofloxacin and imipenem in all 3 age groups. The highest rates of antibiotics resistance of these bacteria by age groups were as follows: amoxicilin-clavulanic acid (63.6 %) in0-24 months, trimethoprim-sulphamethoxasole (52 %) in 25-48 months, trimetoprim-sulphametaxasol (58.1 %) in 49-60 months. There was no statistical difference between the highest rates of antibiotics resistance among ages groups. Conclusions: We can say that; after culture-antibiogram with the usage of suitable antibiotic; resistance to antibiotics can be prevented. Moreover, detremining susceptibilities of isolated microoroganisms to antibiotics may reinforce prophylactic and empirical therapies used in clinics.
