Abstract

Objective: In this study we assessed the effect of topical estradiol on the healing of ischemic colonic anastomosis. Material and methods: A 1 cm segmental resection to the ischemic or non ischemic colon was performed. The bowel continuity achived by an end to end anastomosis 5 cm proximal to the anal verge of the rats. Forthy rats were divided into four groups: a transrektal saline group, an ischemia + transrectal saline group, a transrectal estradiol group and an ischemia + transrectal estradiol group. Seven day-old anastomosis were compared for complications, intra abdominal adhesion, bursting pressure and bursting sides. Results: There were more intra abdominal adhesions in ischemic groups. Five animals in ischemia + transrectal saline group and two animals in ischemia + transrectal estradiol group developed anastomotic dehiscence. In the ischemia + transrectal saline group the median bursting pressure was significantly lower from the other groups and more burst occurred from the anastomosis in this group. Conclusion: Topically administered estradiol influences the healing of anastomosis in ischemic colon segment.
