Abstract

Objectives: The aim of the present study is to assess the patency and related risk factors of modified radical neck dissection in the patients with primary head and neck tumour. Material and methods: This is a prospective study of 20 oncologic patients without risk factors, such as preoperatively applied radiotheraphy or operations with musculocutaneous flap reconstruction, undergoing modified radical neck dissection. In all patients internal juguler veins are preserved during the operation . 33 Internal jugular veins (IJV) are assesed pre- and post operatively with color doppler ultrasonography and contrast enhanced computerized tomography. Results: In only one patient thrombosis of the IJV is observed color doppler ultrasonography and contrast enhanced computerized tomography in the post operative period. Conclusions: Modified radical neck dissection may affect the IJV patency, but by using the appropriate surgical techniqe and especially with the absence of other risk factors IJV patency rate is high.
