Abstract

Objective: Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) is one of the most frequently used indicators of lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation, a general mechanism of tissue damage by free radicals, may induce pathological events. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of tonsillectomy on TBARS and catalase (CAT) levels.. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients, admitted for elective tonsillectomy, were included in the study. CAT and TBARS levels were measured in the resected tonsillar tissues and in the blood samples of the patients 6-7 days before tonsillectomy and 10-12 days after tonsillectomy. Results: After tonsillectomy, plasma TBARS levels were decreased significantly (p<0.001) and CAT levels were increased significantly (p<0.001). We also demonstrated the presence of TBARS and CAT in the tonsillar tissues of patients. Conclusions: The decrease of TBARS and the increase of CAT in the blood samples after tonsillectomy as well as the presence of TBARS and CAT in tonsillar tissues suggest that the lipid peroxidation may have a role in the pathophysiology of chronic tonsillitis.
