Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to explain the carbon dioxide emissions by financial development, tourism and renewable energy consumption for G-20 countries. For this purpose, a panel data analysis is performed by using annual data for nineteen G-20 countries, data period from 1995 to 2017. First of all, the long run cointegration relationship between all variables is tested with Pedroni and Kao cointegration tests and strong cointegration relationship between the variables is found in the long run. Subsequently, long run coefficient estimation results with FMOLS and DOLS methods imply that total energy consumption increased carbon dioxide emissions in the long run, while FMOLS test results indicate that the increase in renewable energy consumption and tourism revenues have a decreasing effect on emissions. Therefore, the results emphasize once again the importance of G-20 countries in the fight against climate change and imply that environmentally friendly policies are also a priority in these countries. On the other hand, it is concluded that the coefficient of financial development is statistically insignificant in both analysis results.
