Abstract

Objectives: We aimed to show the results of the mini-scleral contact lens applied to keratoconus patients. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity, scleral lens corrected visual acuity, flat keratometry (K1), steep keratometry (K2), mean K, maximum K, central corneal thickness, thinnest corneal thickness, apex corneal thickness, location of the cone, lens parameters of kertoconus patients undergoing mini-scleral contact lenses were evaluated. Results: In the study, 76 eyes of 50 patients were evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 28.43±9.6 (15-57) years, and the female to male ratio was 23 (46%)/27 (54%). According to keratometric staging, the number of mild, moderate, advanced stage eyes were 19(25%), 21(27%), 36 (48%), respectively. The localization of the cone was central in 60 (79%) eyes and paracentral in 16 (21%) eyes. According to the Snellen chart, the visual gain obtained with scleral contact lens in patients with moderate and advanced keratoconus was an average of 5 lines. It was found that the visual gain with scleral contact lens was significantly higher in moderate and advanced keratoconus compared to mild keratoconus (p=0.014). It was observed that the cone location had no effect on scleral lens corrected visual acuity (p>0.901). Conclusion: Keratoconus patients, whose vision cannot be improved with glasses, soft or corneal hard gas permeable contact lenses, can obtain significant visual improvement with scleral contact lens’s and they can be a promising option to the patients before corneal transplantation.
