Abstract

Objective: To compare the rates of prostate cancer detection in standard sextant and 12 core biopsy procedures in patients undergoing initial biopsy. Methods: We prospectively applied a 12 core biopsy protocol (standard sextant plus lateral peripheral zone) in 84 patients with normal digital rectal examination and prostate specific antigen levels of 4-10 ng/mL without prior history of prostate biopsy. The cancer detection rates with standard sextant and 12 core procedures in each case itself were compared. Results: Prostate cancer detection rates were 17.8% and 21.4% in the 6 and 12 core biopsy procedures, respectively and this difference was not significant (p= 0.705). Most of the cancer positive cores were from the apical samples. Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that the detection rate of prostate cancer in the initial biopsy is not inreased by obtaining 12 cores instead of standard sextant biopsy.
