Abstract

The use of external (rat-tail catheter) and internal (double J catheter) stents after dismembered pyeloplasty in patients with ureteropelvic junction obstruction were compared. Between January 1990 and March 1998, 67 patients underwent dismembered pyeloplasty operations, in 48 of whom rat-tail catheters were used and in 19 double J stents were placed. When the two groups were compared, the postoperative hospitalisation periods in the double J stent and rat-tail groups were 3-17 days (mean; 6.1 days) and 5-24 days (mean; 12.6 days), respectively. The complications were noted as wound infections in 3 patients (6.25 %), extravasation of urine in 4 (8.3 %), and symptomatic urinary infection in 6 cases (2.5 %) in the rat tail group, whereas the corresponding figures in the double J stent group were 1 (5.3 %), 2 (10.5 %), and 1 (5.3 %), respectively. The postoperative success rates were 91.7 % (44/48) and 89.5 (17/19) in the rat-tail and double J groups, respectively. It seems rational to use rat tail catheters in children and double J stents in adults who undergo dismembered pyeloplasty operations.
