CONCLUSION: As phantom extremity sensation and pain is a potential problem in all individuals that underwent amputation, appreciation of the problems experienced by the patient by the nurse offering him care and training is necessary, and it should be understood that phantom extremity sensation and pain is a normal response to amputation and nurses should play an active part in training the patient on possible sensation and pain and in helping the patient to cope with them.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Amputations are carried out because of different traumas and diseases. Patients with amputation experience multiple, complex problems in addition to phantom limb pain. Phantom limb sensation and pain is a common sequela of amputation, occurring in up to 80% of people who undergo the procedure. MECHANISM of PHANTOM PAIN: Phantom limb pain is commonly classified as neuropathic, and it is assumed to be related to damage of central or peripheral neurons. Both peripheral and central factors have been discussed as determinants of phantom limb pain. Psychological factors do not seem to contribute to the causation but may affect the severity of the pain. MANAGEMENT of PHANTOM PAIN: Management of phantom limb pain, including both pharmacologic and rehabilitative interventions.
