Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity and reliability study and to adaptation of the Hemodialysis Stressor Scale (HSS) in our native language, which was designed by Baldree et al. (1982), for hemodialysis (HD) patients to evaluate the treatment-related stressors. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study was methodically carried out. The study sample consisted of 250 chronic HD patients in the seven HD centers in Ankara between March 2003 and April 2004. Data were collected using the questionnaire, the HSS, and the Coping Strategy Indicator (CSI). For the analysis of data, statistical methods such as descriptive analysis, Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance, reliability analysis, and analysis of correlation were used. RESULTS: The reliability of the HSS was investigated by internal consistency. Cronbach's alpha coefficients obtained in the present study were 0.85, 0.64, 0.80 for total stressor scale, physiological sub-scale, and psychosocial sub-scale, respectively. The item-total correlations are significant all (p<0.001). Expert opinion was consulted regarding the scope validity of the 29-item HSS. Construct validity of the scale was investigated by multitrait-multimethod matrix. Several significant negative relationships between HSS and CSI subscales which was used as a criterion scale were found in this study. CONCLUSION: The validity and reliability of the Turkish adaptation of the HSS was found to be satisfactorily high. KEY WORDS: Hemodialysis, stress, validity, reliability, scale.
