Abstract

Objective: Although febrile seizures are the commonest form of convulsion in childhood, the mechanism by which convulsions are induced, however, is not fully elucidated. In this study, we intend to find out any possible relationship between zinc deficiency and febrile convulsions. Materials and Methods: A hundred children with febrile convulsion were enrolled in the study group. The control groups consisted of 23 febrile children without convulsion and 30 healthy children. Peripheral blood samples were drawn from all patients during the acute phase within 2 hours following the seizures. Results: In the study group, the serum zinc levels were found as mean 103,17±31,07 microgr/dl, whereas serum zinc levels were mean 113,16 ± 35,42 microgr/dl and 106,07±32,06 microgr/dl in the first and second control groups, respectively. Conclusions: No relationship was found between the serum zinc status with age, degree of fever, family history and the number of convulsions. There was no statistically significant difference in the serum zinc levels between the three groups of children.
