Abstract

In the study, 4062 lungs of 6-24 month-old beef cattle slaughtered at Konya abattoirs were examined to determine the incidence, pathology and aetiology of pneumonia, and in 473 cases (11.64 %) pneumonia was detected. Macroscopic lesions were divided into 4 groups. These were lobuler (in 337 lungs), lobar (in 35 lungs), lobar plus lobular (in 59 lungs) and voluminous-oedematous (in 42 lungs) lesions. Furthermore, in 97 cases out of 473 lungs, additional necrotic areas, abscesses and/or adhesions were found as seconder lesions. Pneumonias were classified according to the microscopic findings. Exudative pneumonias were bronchopneumonia (catarrhal bronchopneumonia; KBP, purulent bronchopneumonia; PBP and purulent-necrotic bronchopneumonia; PNBP) and fibrinous type pneumonia (fibrinous pneumonia; FP and fibrino-necrotic pneumonia; FNP) whereas proliferative pneumonias were interstitial pneumonia (IP), bronchointerstitial pneumonia (BIP) and atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP). KBP, PBP, PNBP, FP and FNP found in 16.91 %, 5.29 %, 3.81 %, 12.26 % and 3.38 % cases, respectively. Proliferative pneumonias were IP (20.93 %), BIP (31.08 %) and AIP (6.34 %). In 171 cases (86.80 %) out of 197 lungs with exudative pneumonia, proliferative lesions were also seen. Thus, the incidence of proliferative pneumonias were reached 94.5 percent. Grossly, KBP had usually disseminated and linear-lobular appearance, though PBP and PNBP lesions were generally lobar and sometimes disseminated lobular pattern. FP showed lobar lesions, whereas there was no gross lesions in the lungs with IP and BIP with exception of disseminated or linear-lobular lesions in some cases. AIP revealed, macroscopically, voluminous-edematous lesions.
