Abstract

Introduction: Despite the various methods described for hypospadias which is one of the common genitourinary anomalies, TIPU has been the most preferred technique due to its easy practice and favorable results. In our study, we evaluated the TIPU (tubularized incised plate urethroplasty) results without using cover flap since 2002. Materials and Methods: The 54 patients operated by using TIPU without cover flap during March 2002 - July 2006 have been evaluated retrospectively. The same technique has been applied to all patients by the same team. Whether there has been a correlation between meatal localization and fistula has been evaluated by using the Fisher exact test. Results: In our study 54 patients have been evaluated. The mean age of the patients was 6.3, follow-up period 26.4 months and hospitalization period 6.1 days. Post-operative complications were: Fistula formation in 3 patients (5.5%) and meatal stenosis in 4 patients (7.4%). When the correlation between meatal localization and fistula formation was evaluated by means of Fisher’s exact test, a statistically meaningful difference was not observed (p=0.799). Similarly, no statistically meaningful difference was found between meatal stenosis and meatal localization. Conclusion: Although the success ratio in Snodgrass procedure, especially in distal hypospadiac patients is shown to be very high, great effort is being shown to reach excellent cosmetic and technical results. The most common complication in this technique is urethrocutaneous fistula which has a rate of 3-16%, and meatal stenosis and fistula accompany each other in most cases. The high rate of success in this technique is the usage of a method copying the natural formation of urethra in the reconstruction of neourethra. In this study we aimed to show that there was no need for cover flap when neourethra was properly constructed with TIPU.
