Abstract

The respiratory capacity and strength of inspiratory muscles affect the quality of daily life. Inspiratory muscle training can reduce the possible adverse conditions due to the weakness of inspiratory muscles. The aim of this study to evaluate the effects of inspiratory muscle training with and without devices on lung volume and capacity in healthy young men. Participants were divided into two groups: the training group with the device (n=18) and pursed lips training group (n=16). Powerbreathe Classic HR devices were used for respiratory muscle training. The training loads determined by powerbreath K5 device. The lung volume and capacities were measured by a spirometer. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used for the differences between the pre and post-tests of the groups, and the Mann-Whitney U test for the differences between the groups. After six weeks of breathing exercises, there is no significant difference between the two groups on forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, maximum voluntary ventilation, peak ventilator flow rate, forced expiratory flow at 25-75% of the pulmonary volume (FEF25-75), forced expiratory flow at 25% of the pulmonary volume (FEF25), forced expiratory flow at 50% of the pulmonary volume (FEF50), forced expiratory flow at 75% of the pulmonary volume (FEF75), pressure and power. Power and pressure values of the exercise group with the device were increased at the end of the period (p<0,05). In the pursed lips exercise group FEV1, MVV, FEF 25-75, FEF 75, and FEF 50 parameters were decreased significantly (p<0,05). Our results indicate that neither inspiratory muscle training with the device nor pursed lips training does not promote the increases in lung volume and capacity in young healthy men.

Altı haftalık solunum egzersizleri sonucunda gruplar arasında zorlu vital kapasite (FVC), birinci saniyede çıkarılan zorlu ekspirasyon volümü (FEV1), maksimum istemli ventilasyon (MVV), zirve ekspirasyon akım hızı (PEF), zorlu vital kapasitenin %25-75’i (FEF25-75), zorlu vital kapasite %50’sinde (FEF50) ve zorlu vital kapasite %75’inde (FEF75) anlamlı fark yoktur (p>0,05).
