Abstract

Extensive drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) was defined by a World Health Organisation (WHO) Task Force in October 2006; resistance to isoniaside and rifampin [multi-drug resistance (MDR)] plus resistance to one fluoroquinolone and to one of the three injectabl second line drugs (amikacin, capreomycin and kanamycin). Patients with this resistance pattern is small in number. But it is frightening because only a quarter of the patients are curable and with HIV positivity it is a deadly disease in a short duration. WHO accepts MDR-TB management as one of the main components of TB control. With the emergence of XDR-TB, WHO recommends to give importance to the laboratory strenghtening, better MDR-TB case management, drug supply, infection control practices and produce new drugs and diagnostics.
