Abstract

The importance of mathematical modeling, which is defined as the process of overcoming daily life problems and based on daily life problems, has gradually increased in recent years. It can be said that mathematical modeling, which is a bridge between real life and the world of mathematics, is an effective way to create the bond in the teaching process. The aim of this study is to examine the modeling processes and the difficulties of the 7th grade students in the context of a mathematical modeling activity related to the field measurement in geometric shapes. This study adopts a modeling perspective that sees mathematical modeling as a problem solving activity. Accordingly, a problem-based approach was used in modeling activity. The problem-based approach was chosen to examine and emphasize the modeling process of the task that drives learning. The study was carried out with 16 secondary school students from two secondary schools in the Eastern Black Sea region during the fall semester of 2018-2019. Data collection process was recorded with voice recorder. The case study method was used in this study. At the end of the study, it was determined that the students could not achieve the optimization stage in order to obtain an advanced model showing that they have a tendency to believe that the applicable model is sufficient. There are also shortcomings in the transition to the real world and the mathematical world. The operational difficulties encountered in the modeling process are; Difficulties in using lenght and area units; difficulties in using length and area measurement units and difficulties in using decimal numbers in the process
