Abstract

Objective: To determinant of the abuse extent (physical and sexual) for tile children working or living on streets in Mersin and the affecting potential factors. Method: Data of the study were obtained from a multi-purpose project namely 'Status of Children Working or Living on Streets in Mersin, 2002'. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews with 916 children, by a mobile health vehicle in various districts of Mersin City Center. Results: 97.8% of the children were male and 2.2% were female and themeanage (±SD) was 11.8±2.2 years. Itwasfound out that 64.0% of the children were subjected to domestic or non-domestic violence. Risk factors increasing the possibility of domestic violence were smoking habit of the children, presence of a step-member in the family, alcohol habit of the father, child's working in groups on street, young age of the child and non-domestic violence were sleeping on streets, getting in trouble with police, smoking habits, school- attendance, young age of the child. Conclusion: The number of children living on streets everyday in Mersin is very low. Nearly all of them work on streets and attend to schools. In addition, even letting children work on streets can also be evaluated as a type of abuse and neglect. Thus it is necessary to arise public awareness on the issue. The solutions to be developed for the purpose should include the whole family.
