Abstract

Purpose: To present a series of patients who were treated with laser photocoagulation or cryotheraphy for threshold retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Materials and Methods: Medical records of 258 prematur infants who were followed-up in Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of between September 1999 and May 2003 were evaluated retrospectively. The infants with threshold stage 3+ retinopathy of prematurity were treated with indirect laser photocoagulation or cryotheraphy. Results: In 83 eyes of 44 infants, acute phase ROP was developed. In 37 eyes of 20 infants (%7.7), the disease progressed to threshold stage 3+ ROP. The mean gestastional age in infants with acute phase ROP was 25.9 weeks. The mean birth weight was 1078 gr. In the begining of the study initial 4 infants were refered to other clinics as the equipment of theraphy was not available in our clinic at that moment.13 (24 eyes) infants were treated with diode laser photocoagulation. 3 (5 eyes) infants underwent cryotheraphy. A favorable outcome was achieved in %95.4 of 24 laser-treated eyes. Retinal detachment was developed in one eye and this eye remained stable at stage 4A. Partial buckling surgery was performed in this patients. 2 of 5 eyes that underwent cryotherapy had a favorable outcome. Stage 5 ROP developed in 3 eyes. A mild preretinal hemorrhage was seen in one patients after diode laser and one after cryotherapy. Conclusion: With increased survival rate of low gestastional age premature infants the incidence of ROP also increased. To prevent the permanent visual loss associated with ROP, efficient screening and treatment should be used.
