Abstract

The process of professionalization has been a major development in modern societies. In the 20th Century all occupations, including police, wished to gain a professional status. This study attempts to make some general assessments on the level of professionalism in the Turkish police. In doing so, the nature of professionalism is briefly examined and the defining characteristics of professions are explored. On the basis of these characteristics the paper seeks to identify what professional characteristics are missing. Finally it is argued that the nonexistence of professional association, lack of systematically obtained specialized knowledge, inadequate professional autonomy due to political and legal impediments result in low level of professionalism in the Turkish police.
