Abstract
The suicides detaily investigated and discussed in our study, were committed by officer working in Istanbul Security Directorate in the period of 1997-2002. The data were obtained from the archieves of the Social Services Department, Finger Print Department, Personnel, Crime Scene Investigation Department of Istanbul Security Directorate. There are nearly 30.000 working police officers per year in Istanbul Security Directorate between the years of 1997-2002. The number of fatal suicides during this period was 49. These suicide cases were categorized under sex, age, rank, method chosen, department, time of service, marital status, season and reported reason. It is observed that the single police officers serving the first years in their job, being between the ages of 15-24 have more suicide risk than the other officers. Furthermore, according to the results of this study the importance of determining the tendency to suicide and in, case the police officers has any a psychological disease making sure they get social assistance from the psychological counseling and guiding center is underlined.

Çalışmada Istanbul Emniyet Müdürlüğü'ne bağlı tüm birimlerde 1997-2002 yılları arasında görevli personel arasında meydana gelmiş intiharları ele alınmış ve ayrıntılı olarak incelenmiştir. Çalışma verileri İstanbul Emniyet Müdürlüğü'ne bağlı Sosyal Hizmetler, Personel, Olay Yeri İnceleme ve Parmak izi Şube Müdürlükleri'nin arşiv kayıtlarının geriye dönük taranması sonucu elde edilmiştir. istanbul Emniyet Müdürlüğü'ünde 1997-2002 yılları arasında çalışan ortalama memur sayısı yılda yaklaşık 30.000'dir. Tüm grup içinde ölümle sonuçlanan 49 intihar olgusu meydana gelmiştir, intihar olguları memurların cinsiyet, yaş, rütbe, tercih ettikleri yöntem, çalıştıkları birim, hizmet süresi, medeni durum, mevsim ve bildirilen nedenler başlıkları altında gruplandınlarak incelenmiştir. Memurların bekar, mesleklerinin ilk yılları içinde olmaları ve 15-24 yaş arası olmaları diğer memurlara oranla daha fazla intihar riski taşıdıkları gözlemlenmiştir. Ayrıca araştırma sonucu elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda polislerin intihara başvurma eğilimlerinin önceden fark edilmesi ve psikolojik rahatsızlığı tespit edilen memurların psikolojik danışmanlık ve rehberlik merkezlerinden sosyal destek almaları gerektiği hususuna dikkat çekilmiştir.
