Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of age, the false positive rate of the triple test, and its predictive value for the detection of chromosomal abnormalities in pregnancies of our region that the birth rate is high and the age of gestation is advanced. Method: We studied triple tests with Radio Immune Assay method in 1841 pregnancies. Maternal serum total human chorionic gonadotrophin, alpha feto-protein and unconjugated estriol levels were measured and analyzed with other data’s by a special computerized programme. The risks were determined with the available cut-off values. Results: The age distribution of pregnant was between 17 and 47, and 17,60% of the cases were equal or above 35 years old. The triple tests results of 113 (6,13%) pregnancies were found higher than the cut-off values. Screening result was positive in 106 (5,75%) pregnancies for Down syndrome, and in 7 (0,38%) pregnancies for trisomy 18. Forty-four of pregnancies that had positive risk for Down syndrome and trisomy 18 were evaluated by cytogenetic examination after amniocentesis/ cordosynthesis and two cases of Down syndrome, one case of trisomy 18 and one case of 47,XXX were detected. Positive predictive value for Down syndrome was 5,13%, and invasive procedures were diminished by 65% with the use of triple test. Conclusion: The false positive rate and the positive predictive value for chromosomal abnormalities of the triple test were similar with the previous findings. Screening tests have to be used primarily for diminishing the number of invasive tests in the region that has high birth rate and advanced age of gestation. These tests also have to be recommended to the young pregnant.

Gebelerin 106'sı (%5,75) Down sendromu, yedisi (%0,38) Trizomi 18 yönünden pozitif olup genel test pozitifliği %6,13'tür. Down sendromu ve Trizomi 18 riski pozitif olan 113 gebeden 44'ü (%38,94) amniyosentez / kordosentez sonrası sitogenetik olarak değerlendirilmiş ve iki olguda Down sendromu, bir olguda trizomi 18, bir olguda da 47,XXX saptanmıştır. Down sendromu için pozitif prediktif değer %5.13 bulundu.
