Abstract

Objective: To investigate any relationship between severity of preeclampsia and plasma levels of homocysteine. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from 8 mild preeclamptic, 9 severe preeclamptic and 10 healthy pregnant women admitted to Obstetric and Gynecology Department at Firat University Medical Center. The hematological, biochemical and demographic parameters of pregnant women together with weight of the newborns were noted. Plasma homocysteine levels were measured by using enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and read by using ELX800. Results: The demographic characteristics of participant women were found to be similar. Plasma homocysteine levels of mild and severe preeclamptic women were higher than those seen in the healthy pregnant women (p<0.05). In addition, the severe preeclamptic women had a higher plasma homocysteine levels than the mild preeclamptics (p<0.05). It was found that the weights of the newborns of preeclamptic women were lower than those of healthy pregnant (p<0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between plasma homocysteine levels and weight of the newborns (r=-0.48, p<0.05, n=27). Conclusion: We suggest that plasma homocysteine levels may be related to severity of preeclampsia, and that elevated levels of plasma homocysteine may have a negatory effect on fetal development.
