Abstract

Objective: It is well known that atherosclerosis is strongly associated with chronic inflammation. Monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio has been recently suggested as a predictor of inflammation and adverse cardiac events. The aim of the study is to in- vestigate the relationship between coronary artery calcium score and monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio. Material and Method: Clinical records of 243 patients who underwent coronary computed tomographicy angiography due to the pres- ence of angina-like symptoms were retrospectively investigated. Patients were divided into two group; patients having coronary artery disease and normal coronary arteries. Clinical characteristics, coronary artery calcium score and biochemical parameters were recorded. Monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio was calculated and it was tested whether there is a correlation between mono- cyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and coronary artery calcium score. Results: Monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio levels were significantly higher in patients with coronary artery disease (n=124) than in those with normal coronary arteries (n=119) (13.6±5.5 vs 10.2±3.6, p<0.001). In addition coronary artery calcium score is possitively corralated with monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (r=0.279, p <0.001). Conclusion: Monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio values were increased in patients with coronary artery disease monocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio was positively correlated with coronary artery calcium score which is a well- known indicator for coronary artery disease. Because several factors may affect monocyte count further prospective studies are needed.
