Abstract

Aim: The efficacy of spiral computed tomography (SCT) in detecting coronary artery calcification accompanying coronary artery disease was evaluated by comparing tomographic findings with angiographic findings. Material and Method: Coronary angiography was performed in 70 patients after SCT. The presence of calcification at the proximal and distal segments of left anterior descending (LAD), circumflex (Cx) and right coronary artery (RCA) was investigated. Results: The sensitivity, specifity, positive and negative predictive values of SCT in determining calcificafion in CAD were 83%, 72.5%, 81%, 75%. SCT was more sensitive in detecting calcifications accompanying left coronary artery compared to right coronary artery (p=0.0001). SCT was not effective in terms of detecting the calcifications in distal segments of coronary arteries. Conclusion: SCT is an effective modality in detecting coronary artery calcification associated with coronary artery disease, especially calcifications accompanying the critical stenosis in the proximal segment of the LAD and Cx.
