Abstract

AIM: It has previously been shown that cell adhesion molecules are involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. However, only few studies have addressed the relation between these molecules and syndrome X. We examined the clinical significance of cell adhesion molecules; intracell adhesion molecule (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM-1), E-selectin in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and syndrome X (S-X) and the relation between the levels of these molecules and these diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 25 patients with coronary artery disease (15 men,10 women; mean age:57±7 years) and 25 patients with syndrome X (8 men, 17 women; mean age:55±5 years) and 30 the control subjects (CS ). RESULTS: The levels of studied cell adhesion molecules in the CAD patients were greater than CS. The levels of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in CAD group were greater than in S-X group (49.12±12.01 vs 42.34±11.12, P<0.001 and 35.62±15.13 vs 26.42±11.30, P<0.001 respectively). There was no significant difference between S-X group and with respect to cell adhesion molecules. However, S-X patients showed a tendency to increase the levels of all cell adhesion molecules. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that ICAM and VCAM may play an important role in the pathogenesis of coranary artey disease than in the pathogenesis of syndrome X.
