Abstract

AIM: The presence and intensity of left atrial spontaneous echo contrast (SEC) is a predictor of thromboembolic events especially in patients with mitral stenosis and atrial fibrillation. But SEC intensity is generally determined by qualitative methods. In this study, we aimed the quantification of left atrial SEC by using integrated backscatter (IBS) method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirtytwo patients (23 female, 9 male) with various diseases undergoing transesophageal echocardiography were included. Mean age was 52+13. The reason for transesophageal echocardiography was mitral stenosis in 22, atrial septal defect in 4, aortic dissection in 1, infective endocarditis in 1, perivalvular leak status-post mitral valve replacement in 1 and thromboembolic event aetiology screening in 3 patients. Thirteen patients were in atrial fibrilation and 19 patients in sinus rythm. Left atrial SEC was graded qulitatively as no SEC (n=12), mild (n=12) and severe SEC (n=8). RESULTS: All groups were compared to each other according to quantitative IBS values. Among no SEC, mild SEC and severe SEC groups, left atrial IBS values were found statistically significant (p<0,05). CONCLUSION: left atrial SEC can be quantitatively determined by IBS method.
