Abstract

Aim: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, inflamatory and systemic disease that may affect pericardium, myocardium and the conduction system of the heart. In this study we aimed to determine right ventricular systolic and diastolic function using tissue Doppler echocardiography ( TDE). Material and Method: The study recruited 30 patients with AS (12 female and 18 male, mean age; 37±10.23 years) and 30 healthy volunteers (14 female and 16 male, mean age; 33.2±8.12 years) having the similar demographic characterisations. Right ventricular systolic and diastolic function were assessed with two dimensional (2D) echocardiography, M-mode echocardiography, pulsed-wave (PW) echocardiography and tissue Doppler echocardiography. Results: Basal characteristic features were not different between patients with ankylosing spondylitis and the control group with conventional echocardiography. Early and late tricuspid flow velocities were not different between patients with AS and the control group but deceleration time was longer in AS group with conventional echocardiography. Systolic wave velocity (S), early diastolic velocity (E’) and late diastolic velocity (A’) at tricuspid lateral anulus, myocardial precontraction time (PCTm) and contraction time (CTm) were not different between two groups but E/A ratio was lower, myocardial relaxation time was longer and myocardial performance index was higher in AS group. Conclusions: It was shown by tissue Doppler echocardiography that right ventricle systolic functions were protected but diastolic functions disturbed in patients with AS.

Sonuç: AS’li hastalarda sağ ventrikül sistolik fonksiyonlarının korunduğu fakat diyastolik fonksiyonların bozulduğu doku Doppler ekokardiyografi ile gösterildi.
