Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to examine clinical, demographic and angiographic features of patients under 40 years of age with acute coronary syndrome and compare the data with those reported in current literature. Material and Method: A total of 228 patients with myocardial infarction (148 with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and 80 with non-ST segment elevation myocard infarction) who admitted to Gaziantep Doktor Ersin Arslan Research and Training Hospital between 2014 and 2017 were included in the study. Biochemical and hematological parameters, risk factors and angiographic features of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Major risk factors identified in the study patients were male sex, low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and smoking. The left anterior descending artery was most commonly involved in both ST-segment elevation and non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction. Positive family history and blood uric acid level were significantly more prevalent risk factors in patients with non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction in comparison to patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (p<0.05). Conclusion: A better understanding of the clinical characteristics of patients under 40 years of age with acute coronary syndrome and the risk factors involved may be beneficial for the management of these patients as well as preventive medicine.
