Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the visual results and complications following cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation in pediatric cataracts. Cataract extraction with aspiration technique was performed on 21 eyes of 16 patients aging between 2.5 to 18 years old (mean, 9.7 years) and additionally primary intraocular lens implantation was performed on 19 eyes of these patients. The mean follow-up was 11 months (range, 2 to 26 months). Postoperatively, spectacle-corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved in 33.7 %. The most common complications encountered after the surgery was posterior capsule opacification ( 47.3 %), fibrinoid membrane (38%), posterior synechiae (9.5 %). The average time of beginning of posterior capsule opacification was 4 months. About seventy-eight percent of these patients underwent Nd:YAG capsulotomy. In conclusion, cataract surgery with aspiration technique and primary intraocular lens implantation is safe and effective method in the treatment of pediatric cataracts.
