Abstract

PURPOSE: To establish normal standarts for head circumference (HC), inner canthal (IC) and outer canthal (OC) distances of 7-to 15-year-old children in our region and to calculate canthal index and circumference-interorbital index specific for the race of the patient as well as for age and sex. METHODS: Head circumference, inner canthal and outer canthal distances were obtained for 2081 children (1126 boys, 955 girls) aged between 7 to 15 years old. We obtained normal percentile standarts specific for the age and sex and compared to those of other racial and ethnic populations. RESULTS: In male children, the mean values of HC, IC and OC were found to be 53.29 ± 2.12 cm, 29.86 ± 2.50mm and 85.87 ± 4.31 mm, respectively. In female children, the mean values of these values were found to be 52.54 ± 2.18 cm, 29.67 ± 2.36 mm and 84.68 ± 4.03 mm, respectively. CONCLUSION: Growth and developmental data and the normal IC values of healthy children are useful in early identification of craniofacial syndromes, postraumatic or congenital telecanthus which might be obscured by the various somatometric traits of the face and of planning surgical intervention. We suggest that the comparison of craniofacial dimensions of a patient must be performed with normal standarts specific for race as well as age and sex.

Hastanın kraniofasial boyutlarının karşılaştırmaları yaş, cinsiyet ve ırk'a özel normal standartlarla olmalıdır.
