Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of patching regimens in moderate amblyopia. Material and Method: Seventyeight moderate amblyopic patients who applied to Bakirkoy Dr. Sadi Konuk Research and Education Hospital Orthoptic Clinic between January 2003 and May 2007 and who could adapt the patching regimens were enrolled in the study. Patients were grouped according to their patching hours and combined with at least 1 hour of near visual activities during patching. One group (36 children) had 2 hours patching a day while the other had 6 hours. The children were examined at the first, fourth and sixth months of the treatments and their visual acuity were checked in every visit. Statistical analysis of the groups was also performed according to mean ages, visual acuity before the treatment and the type of amblyopia. Results: Thirtyfour (%43,5), of the 78 amblyopic patients were male and 44 (%56,5) were female. The ages of the children were between 5 and 10 years and the mean age was 8.23±0.48years. Thirtysix (46.2%) children had 2 hours patching and 42 (%53,8) children had 6 hours patching a day. There was no statistical significance difference between the effects of the 2 and 6 hours patching regimens on the visual outcomes. Also there was no meaningful relationship between the response to patching and the type of the amblyopia, age and visual acuity before the treatment. Conclusion: There was no significant difference between the 2 and 6 hours patching regimens in our study. We believe that the near visual activities and shorter duration of patching would increase the success and the compliance of the study.
