Abstract

Aim: Comparison of aqueous humor levels of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and 9 (MMP-9) in eyes with and without pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome at aqueous humor. Material and Method: Total 30 eyes consisting of 17 eyes (Group 1) without pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome and 13 eyes (Group 2), cataract surgery applied due to senile cataract and aqueous humor samples were taken from anterior chamber during surgery have been included in the study. Aqueous humor samples were kept at -80°C. Study has been performed on the levels of quantitative MMP-2 (gelatinase A) and MMP-9 (gelatinase B) by means of ELISA method. Results: While the average age of the patients was 63.4±4 years in Group 1, the average age of the patients was 61.3±2 years in Group 2 (p>0.05). Ratio of woman/man was 8/9 in Group 1, and was 7/6 in Groupt 2 (p>0.05). While MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels at humor aqueous of the eyes in Groupt 1 were 151.29 ng/ml and 12.94 ng/ml; these values at eyes with PEX syndrome were determined respectively as 205.03 ng/ml and 18.66 ng/ml. Although MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels in the eyes with PEX syndrome were found higher than those found in the control group, this difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Although gelatinized group MMPs known as predominant at aqueous humor was not statistically significant, they were determined higher as values in eyes with PEX syndrome. While it is thought that such increase in MMPs would also play a role at PEX syndrome pathogenesis by leading abnormal accumulation of matrix material, the fact that such increment is not reached a meaningful value may be originated from the fact that glaucoma has not yet been developed in patients with PEX syndrome.
