Abstract

Purpose: To determine the effects of Vigabatrin on the visual fields of epileptic children. Material and Methods: Sixteen patients between ages of 6 and 18 (mean 14.6±3.7) who were on Vigabatrin therapy at least for one year were examined. Eleven children who cooperated reliably, were evaluated in terms of nasal and temporal widths of their 60 degree automated visual field tests. The drug was discontinued in patients whose central 30 degrees were affected. Differences in the horizontal width of baseline and control visual fields after drug withdrawal were statistically compared. Results: Three patients had normal visual fields. One patient was able to demonstrate a normal 0-30 degree test, but constriction was evident binasally on 30-60 degree testing. Remaining 7 patients (63.3%) had constrictions encroaching upon central 30 degrees and Vigabatrin was discontinued. There were statistically significant improvements in terms of horizontal visual field widths after 8-14 months (mean 13±2.3 months) from drug withdrawal (Paired Samples Test, p<0.05). Conclusions: Patients on Vigabatrin medication suffer visual field loss attributable to this drug. Some of these field defects can only be detected with 30-60 degree peripheral visual field testing, which is important in the early diagnosis of this side effect. The present study suggests some reversibility of retinal dysfunction after drug withdrawal in children.

Özet

Amaç: Epileptik çocuklarda Vigabatrin'in neden olduğu görme alanı kaybını değerlendirmek.
