Abstract

Purpose: It is planned to evaluate the patients with amaurosis fugax complaints for the risk of carrying cardiovascular diseases. Material and Methods: Twenty patients who have applied to our clinic with this complaint were evaluated with transthoracic echocardiography and carotid artery Doppler ultrasonography. Full ophthalmologic examinations of the patients have been made; they were asked for accompanying systemic diseases, and after this, serum lipid profiles have been evaluated. Results: The mean age of the patients was 49.8±14.5 years (range:20-72); 12 of them were females (60%), and 8 of them were males (40%). Ophthalmologic examinations of the patients were normal but 4 of them (20%) had hyperlipidemia, 6 of them (30%) had hypertension, 1 of them (5%) had migraine, 5 of them (25%) had cardiac valvular diseases, and 1 of them (5%) had peripheric vascular diseases in their medical stories. Eleven patients (55%) had lesions detectable by echocardiography; 3 patients (15%) had lesions detectable by carotid Doppler ultrasonography. Discussion: Patients who apply to ophthalmologists with amaurosis fugax complaints have high risk of carrying cardiovascular diseases. So, it is important to evaluate, follow up and treat these patients in cardiovascular aspects.
