Abstract

Based on the idea that Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus may be used as an instrument to blur the boundaries between the opposites like war/peace, death/life, soldier/army, individual/state, battlefield/motherland, fear/courage, illusion/reality, etc., this article aims to trace the war between soldier-habitus and poet-habitus in the trenches of the Great War through the poems of English poets who passed away on the front or behind the front lines. This tracing provides a possibility to observe the paradigmatic transformation of the cult of monument and monumentality which is one of the basic components of the construction of social memory in modern times through war and death
