Abstract

Psychogenic movement disorders (PMD) present with various clinical demonstrations in neurological practice. In this article, a patient diagnosed with psychogenic blepharospasm will be presented. The first complaints of the 47 year-old woman began six years previously followingr emotional stress. In this period of six years, various treatments including botulinum toxin were administered to the patient who, with time, developed functional blindness. However the patient had no benefit from these treatment protocols. The patient was diagnosed with psychogenic blepharospasm according to the clinical and electrophysiological features. The patient’s complaint was completely resolved with lorezepam and suggestion. In conclusion, diagnosis and treatment of patients with PMD can be difficult. The high resistance rate to the treatment should not be forgotten and these patients must be treated multidisciplinarily.
