Abstract

Objective: The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis decreased with age. According to our knowledge about 15% of enuretics will stop bedwetting spontaneously without any treatment. This study was performed to evaluate the possible effects of living apart from family on the course of Monosymptomatic Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (MNE) in male school children. Materials & Methods: Prevalence rate of MNE of male school children living with family, apart from family and without any family, who hadn't take any diagnosis/therapy was assessed by a questionnaire filled out in a face to face fashion by a researcher. A total of 1322 boys from three different schools were enrolled to this study. Groups were determined according to children's family life. Group A was consisted of boys living in an orphanage (n=660), Group B was including boys who are boarding students (n=177), and Group C (control group) was the random sample group drawn from a primary school (n=485). Age range was 6 to 16 years in all groups. Results: A total of 113 nocturnal enuretic children who hadn't take any diagnosis/therapy were encountered in all groups. The prevalence rate of MNE was 8.5% (n: 56) in Group A, 12.4% (n: 22) in Group B, and 7.2% (n: 35) in Group C (p>0.05). Mean age of enuretics in Group A, B, and C were 10.27 yr, 10.86 yr, and 8.74 yr, respectively. The mean age of enuretics in Group C was significantly lower than those of enuretics in Group AandB (p<0.05). Conclusions: Living apart from family has a negative effect on course of MNE.
