Abstract

Visual materials are heavily used in teaching science although they are not fully accessible by the majority of visually impaired students. First hand experiences are vital in concept development as each experience provides rich data to understand the related concept. As visually impaired students are mainly rely on hearing and touching in information acquisition, practical activities should include tactile materials with a clear and rich description. The aim this study is to provide an effective teaching for the concept of density through insoluble liquids to visually impaired students. For this purpose, visually impaired student’s need analyses were carried out by an evaluative case study. Following the need analysis stage, material and activity were designed and instructional plan was developed. Eight students including five boys and three girls studying at a special middle school for visually impaired students were participated. The results showed a positive effect on students’ conceptual learning of density.

Özet

Görme yetersizliğinden etkilenen öğrencilerin öğretim sürecinde, yoğun olarak görsel materyaller kullanıldığında öğretilen kavramlar yeterince öğrenilememektedir. Bu yüzden görme yetersizliğinden etkilenen öğrencilere ilk elden bilgi alabilecekleri deneyimler sağlanmalıdır. Çünkü her deneyim kavram gelişimine katkı sağlamaktadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Erzurum ili Görme Engelliler Ortaokulu’nda 6. sınıfta öğrenim gören 5’i erkek 3’ü kız olmak üzere toplam 8 görme yetersizliğinden etkilenen öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmanın sonucuna göre birbiri içinde çözünmeyen sıvılar konusundaki yoğunluk kavramının öğreniminde başarı sağlandığı gözlemlenmiştir.
